Certification to ISO 14001:2004 involved Stiller Group in an in-depth assessment of all areas of the business to identify their impact on the environment, followed by implementation of processes designed to minimise or eradicate those impacts.
As a result, waste to landfill from the Newton Aycliffe site has been reduced by 50% over the past 12 months, with 50% of waste now recycled and sold as a commodity. Targets and programs are now in place to reduce fuel, water and energy consumption, and the Group is working with The Carbon Trust to look at the overall carbon footprint and identify ways to minimise this.
Stiller Group’s documented environmental management system incorporates vital aspects such as pollution prevention controls, emergency response procedures and spillage controls. The Group is now working towards integrating quality, environmental and Health & Safety systems for all its 10 sites around the UK.
Commenting for Stiller Group, Environmental Manager Billy Naisbett confirmed the value of the process for the business. “Achieving the first of our planned ISO 14001 accreditations demonstrates Stiller Group’s professionalism and commitment to the environment,” he stated. “It also underlines our dedication to continuous improvement in all areas of the business.”
To assist in the process, Billy has completed a course in Advanced EMS Auditing with the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).
